21st and 22nd March 2009
JG visiting so we had a 'full on' fettle and the car is now ready for an MOT
Braking News : front brakes are back on the car
Here are PBE's 5 shoes, one had a crack which JG drilled a hole into stop it spreading. This one is reinforced with part of an old shoe (so the same material with the same expansion under braking heat)
also needed to replace two of the nuts that hold the hub/ wheel on. So JG had spot welded these
Electrical Storm
We had a bit of a missfire when we test drove the car on 24th January but the brakes kept us too busy. On that day we put in new plugs and since then WT has supplied us with new HT leads (lovely they are and supplied with the terminals expertly soldered on). So we fitted these....JG is smiling because we haven't tried starting the car yet. Anyway lets just say that we reviewed (and tried to replace) the points , distributor cap, coil & condensor. Found a few problems with the spares we have (wrong distributor cap, incorrect fitting for the replacement coil) but as usual with a misfire we eventually found a cause... well two causes- one was the points and the other was a bit more difficult to find- the terminal on the back of the ignition switch had snapped/ sheered off. JG did a good soldering/ swapping terminals fix. We were both well behaved despite the frustration and felt that it was useful RAID preparation that we had a misfire practice (and it's so much easier with coffee and biscuits on hand.....)
So finally we went for a test drive and the brakes worked well. I found the speedo working (approx 10mph slow) very exciting.
EXHAUSTION
The current exhaust ends by the pasenger door. I think this was a trials / ground clearance trick but it's VERY NOISY. JG had been in a Kwick Fit skip and acquired some different pieces of pipe. He played with different lengths and angles and came up with a neat system. Check out the squashed silencer- it used to live behind the brake drum ... Some neat brackets and exhaust paste and all is tickety boo.... good and faithful JG... I think he had fun with all his power tools, his welder, angle grinder and being creative. We even think DAT might be pleased with the new exhaust.... now we need to tart up the rear end and change those tail lights...
The garage wall check list is looking a bit more satisfying too
