well no wonder the chain wouldn't stay on .... Reverse is buggered...
took the car to Ju & L G and got help from David.
- under tray out (not an easy task in itself!)
- chains off
- rag undone
- lots of unbolting including a metal strip that ties the body together (but JuG
- slide the bevel box out (a bit like childbirth I thought)
Then
- have a good look at it, wiggle it
- take it apart 'this is odd'
- and well its lucky it was still running
So with the interest , technical advice, support & help of the Andy Nashman and the works diagrams david came up with a plan. He's making two new 16 teeth 5/8ths pitch sprockets as they are two worn. It was decided they needed to be an even number on both sprockets. My reverse is 5/8ths chain so its not off the shelf in the spares). There's been too much movement in the reverse shaft so we need a new one and the sleeve. This time it will be held into the new chassis mountings with a castellated nut. DAT was quite sure that the car was rebuilt from three speed to four by the works and this was an early set up of a reverse system. Everyone thinks its quite good so we're replacing the Thirlby ? Frazer Nash Works Modification
a new rag joint.... another post on its own me thinks
How goes it with this job?
