Patrick Two Names says my car is as "Flat as a Pancake"

and of course he's correct .

There's some slackness in the drive (a third of a turn!) which is taken up when the car is running

Also there's too much movement in the distributor body.  

& when we have tried to adjust the points then the car just won't work.

David had look and noticed the condenser is the wrong side of the coil for starters...

He also also noticed that the distributor gears are very worn and is "suprised the the car is running"there there was a differential diagnosis of the slackness in the drive... of sloppy timing chains so i'm relieved its not engine out...

Apparently it's a little DK4A .  So off with the distributor for a a rebuild (typically  £185.00+ vat and a 4 week turn around)

So the Distributor Dr ordered

• A Full rebuild & recalibration DJ/DK HybridCC top 12 deg@15
• replaced the dahft
• re[;aced the cam
• 2 weight advance 400148/50 
• LT connector DK 400034 replaced

on the Rag

so how long has this fabric coupling been on the car...i feel very familiar with it , its definitely irritating to put in get out. The general consensus is its a little worn and need to be replaced.  A new one of course is not off the shelf.  There is Nash one but not like mine...

Reverse

well no wonder the chain wouldn't stay on .... Reverse is buggered...

took the car to Ju & L G and got help from David.

• under tray out (not an easy task in itself!)
• chains off
• rag undone
• lots of unbolting including a metal strip that ties the body together (but JuG 
• slide the bevel box out (a bit like childbirth I thought)

 

 

Then

• have a good look at it, wiggle it 
• take it apart 'this is odd' 
• and well its lucky it was still running  

So with the interest , technical advice, support & help of the Andy Nashman and the works diagrams david came up with a plan.  He's making two new 16 teeth 5/8ths pitch sprockets as they are two worn.  It was decided they needed to be an even number on both sprockets.  My reverse is 5/8ths chain so its not off the shelf in the spares).   There's been too much movement in the reverse shaft so we need a new one and the sleeve.  This time it will be held into the new chassis mountings with a castellated nut.   DAT was quite sure that the car was rebuilt from three speed to four by the works and this was an early set up of a reverse system.  Everyone thinks its quite good so we're replacing the Thirlby ? A trip to the archives to find out about our cars...  

The archives gave me a copy of  the sales letter when Dudley Redmond of The Brewery, Biggleswade bought the car on the 22nd august 1927 and then there's a lot of letters 'reminding' & 'begging'  he pays.  The works records show repairs : head gasket change , bevel box rebuilds, balls of grease and all from 1928-29

I was hoping there would be records on the rebuild in 1934.

From the book "John V .Bolster . 1930_34, who turned the car over when cornering to briskly on the bank at the side of the road.  the car was rebodied to Boulogne I specification by the works in 1934, and later fitted with an Anzani"
