Its all a bit tight in there... you can even see the V from DATs previous hacksaw bodge.  In the interest of the clutch staying together we think it's good to keep the restraining disk in but we need to create a bit of room for it.

The best and permanent solution (only one?) seams to be to refabricate the clutch pedal arm so it doesn't angle into the clutch and there's therefore enough clearance of the toggles and the restraining disk.    

Here's Jon making a cardboard verison and me cutting it out and a 'strap on' wooden template (note the technical markings showing how it lines up on the old arm)  The clutch arm and template are heading South in Jon's van as I blog....

 

       

Propshaft back in: 3rd attempt on this clutch rebuild

Been busy getting all the pieces ready for assembly.  Spurred along by the car husbands visit.  I like to think I am the perfect sou mechanic and am grateful for him taking clutch responsibility away from me. A lot of other men have been helping too, Winston, James and Ken...oh and DAT doesn't know Jon and I were in his garage aquiring some steel tube and a socket...he doesn't use the internet or answer the phone so I think I'm safe....

So a shiny new bit ... the old bearing house was too worn and the bearing too sloppy: here's the new one with that all important 1202 self aligning ball bearing (15x35x11mm) and a nipple to pack full of grease.  Had to gently sand down the spigot so it was a press fit into the bearing.

 


Put in new toggle arms bought from Ian Lock.  The toggle arms need to sit parallel to the clutch plate plus a couple of mm when the spring is loaded up which allows for a bit of wear to take angle through parallel i.e. tips nearer the plate: then pivot needs adjusting.  Checked the pressure on the plate so that the toggle arms each have equal pressure onto the plate.  Removed Jame's big plate (1st blog) because these new toggle arms are a better/ correct length.  

Then Winstons special restraining device and here you can see the clutch going back in (shiny new spigot bearing carrier) helped by the removal of the brake crosshsaft and dads spare wheel bracket .  However theres NOT a lot of room in there and its all too close to the pedal.  So put in the new centering bolt at the rag joint and here's the clock on the prop with 15thou movment ... good enough for an Anzani?
